Black can easily withstand being hit because by establishing both White’s 3-point and 4-point, he has a strong defensive position. With such a position, Black will certainly be able to play for a long time. Unfortunately if White hits on the 3-point, it will be a long time before Black becomes a strong favorite. Instead of allowing Black to have a fifth man sent back, this play instead hits White and sends another man of White’s back. Playing 21/15* has several advantages. It prevents White from establishing the 15-point which would be a key point to control your back men. It also leaves White generally weak and devoid of builders on his side of the board. Thus it will be many rolls before White can build up any strength there. Instead of taking a man out of the outfield 11/5, the correct play adds a man to the outfield and gives Black a clear advantage in the fight for control of the outer boards. This is always a factor in any long-term positional game. Hitting White and putting two men on the bar without leaving a return shot gives Black the initiative and time to do several possible constructive actions as well as making it totally safe for him to give up his advanced anchor on the 21-point. With his initiative, Black can force White into a defensive holding game by seizing key points in his outer board. He could even contest control of his own 4- or 5-point since he already has builders on his 6-, 8- and 11-points. Other builders can rapidly be brought into his outfield. To summarize, the correct play leaves Black with a definite initiative which can easily be converted into a superior position and chances for an early victory in the next few rolls if White rolls poorly. The alternate plays settle for solid positions but with considerably less prospect for an immediate clear-cut advantage. Note – it is important to think out your whole move before taking part of it.
